My Background and Qualifications

I began my training in 1995 following a chance remark by someone who saw how calm I could be in a difficult situation. I began a Counselling Skills course and quickly felt that I had found my life’s calling.

At the time I had no other qualifications and so I decided to go to university as a mature student, however first I needed to complete an Access to Higher Education course. I then took a BSc (Hons) in Psychology and Counselling at Roehampton Institute London. I built on this by qualifying as a Business/Life Coach, launching a coaching practice and then completing a MSc in Occupational (Work) Psychology at Birkbeck. The Doctorate in Counselling Psychology at the University of the West of England, Bristol completed my journey to Chartered Psychologist.

Registrations and Memberships

I am a Chartered Psychologist with both the British Psychological Society (BPS) and the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI). I am also registered as a Practitioner Psychologist with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) in the UK. These memberships and registrations mean that I am accountable and expected to act in a professional and ethical manner and to fulfil a set of standards in my practice.

My Doctorate Research

One of the things that really fascinates me is metaphors – that’s when we talk about or experience one kind of thing in terms of another. We're all using metaphors all of the time mostly without realising it!  As part of my doctorate, I completed an in-depth research study into the use of client’s metaphors in coaching and psychological therapy. My research thesis is available to read for free here: https://uwe-repository.worktribe.com/output/5628480.

I also coauthored an article about use of student’s metaphors in research supervision (Ramsey-Wade, C.E. & Cott, M.J. (2024). Student-generated metaphor in research supervision. Counselling and Psychotherapy Research, 25(1). The article is available to read for free here: https://doi.org/10.1002/capr.12790.
