What To Expect From Therapy

Psychological therapy is a talking therapy. A useful analogy is to think of your life as a walk or journey. On that walk or journey, you will be very familiar with where you are and where you have come from, and to a greater or lesser extent, you may have ideas about the direction you’re heading in. A Psychologist is like someone you invite to walk alongside you for a while. A Psychologist will notice many of the same things that you notice and they will also notice things that you have either forgotten or never noticed before. The interaction between you and your Psychologist increases your awareness and leads to insights that you can apply to your current situation, challenges or goals.

Private Healthcare Insurance

I am registered with several private healthcare insurers in Ireland (Irish Life, VHI, Laya) and the UK (Bupa, Vitality, Axa, Aviva). Please advise me if you wish to claim back fees through your private healthcare policy. As a Chartered Psychologist I can provide health insurance receipts. NB: All claims are subject to the T&Cs of your individual policy.

Focus Of The Sessions

Before your first session, I’ll discuss with you or send you some questions to help you reflect on what you wish to focus on in your sessions. Then in the first session, we will explore this together and from this we’ll aim to agree an initial focus for the sessions. You can adjust this initial focus as we go so that sessions remain beneficial to you.

Typical Number Of Sessions

There is no obligation to have a set number of sessions as it depends on the nature of the issues and challenges you are experiencing. New clients will often have a weekly session for around 12 weeks but we will regularly review progress to ensure that sessions continue to be beneficial.

My Approach

Essentially, I aim to provide you with a confidential space in which you can explore and express what is going on for you. I will listen carefully and pay close attention to what’s important to you. I will ask you simple questions and share observations and impressions that I think may be useful to you. I will not tell you what to do. I am trained in several therapy models or approaches including person-centred, relational (sometimes called psychodynamic) and cognitive behavioural. I also draw from my personal and professional life experience and Buddhist meditation practice. I will take an integrative approach, collaborating with you, as a unique human being, to work out the combination of approaches best suited to you and your circumstances.

Terms and Conditions

I believe that it’s very important to have a clear and agreed understanding of the basis on which you will work with a Psychologist. A shared understanding helps to prevent misunderstandings and ensures both the Client and the Psychologist can use their time and work together productively. If you choose to work with me, the Terms & Conditions (T&Cs) of how we will work together form a ‘Booking Agreement’ - this sets out my T&Cs, including payment of fees, cancellation policy, and confidentiality and its limitations. You can view the Booking Agreement HERE and if you have any questions please contact me. When booking your first appointment, you are indicating that you have read, understood and agree to these terms and conditions, as a well as the privacy notice.
